What happens when a vice-captain (in Bleach)?

It doesn't matter If you've achieved your bankai or not As long as your stronger than your Captain and duel him You are awarded the the new Captain and the former captain is deduced to a Vice Captain. Just look At Zaraki Kenpachi he doesn't have a bankai nor does he know the name of his blade but he is still Captain because of raw Spiritual Power.
